How to Add Extra Baggage & Prices on West Air China

Buy Baggage
  1. Go to westair.cn and make sure your ticket is not checked in (cancel check-in first if already checked in).
  2. Open flight booking under value-added products / checked baggage pre-purchase, or use the excess baggage fare calculator on the baggage product page to check your route's rate.
  3. Select your flight and choose a prepaid allowance in 5 kg increments (5-30 kg), then pay via the official site, WeChat account, hotline 95373, Hainan Airlines APP/mini-program, or an authorized OTA.
  4. If your flight date changes, call 95373 (+86-898-95373 from outside China) before check-in to move the prepaid allowance to the new flight; for refunds, apply via the original purchase channel (self-service value-added product order page for site/WeChat/SMS purchases).
  5. At the airport, check excess bags at the counter: any weight above your prepaid amount is charged at the counter rate, and unused prepaid weight is not refunded.

Domestic excess uses airport check-in counter rates; totals are rounded down to the nearest 10 yuan. Prepaid packages cost 80%-100% of the counter rate depending on departure city (see prepaid item).

How does the airline calculate extra baggage charges?

Excess fees are weight-based per kg, priced in three flight-distance bands: 0-800 km (excl.), 800-1600 km (excl.), and 1600 km and above. Prepaid allowance is sold in 5 kg packages at a discount off the airport counter rate; any weight above the prepaid amount is charged at the full counter rate ('pay extra, no refund for unused weight').

How many extra bags can I buy, and what are the bag limits?

Each checked piece may weigh at most 50 kg on domestic routes (32 kg on international/regional routes) with max dimensions 40 × 60 × 100 cm; heavier or larger pieces need prior airline approval or must go as cargo. Single heavy pieces exceeding the free allowance are charged per-piece tiers instead of the per-kg rate. At the gate, oversized carry-on is charged CNY 240/piece domestic (CNY 700/piece international) or by actual weight if higher.

Is it cheaper to buy extra baggage online in advance vs at the airport?

Yes. Domestic prepaid allowance is discounted 0-20% off the counter rate depending on departure city (80%-100% of counter rate); international prepaid is discounted 10-20% depending on package size. Domestic OTA prices may be up to 5% above official-channel prepaid prices.

What are the overweight or oversized baggage rules?

Domestic single pieces exceeding the free allowance by 0-10/10-20/20-30/30-40 kg cost CNY 200/400/600/800 per piece; 40 kg and above costs CNY 25/kg. International equivalents are CNY 300/600/900/1200 per piece and CNY 40/kg for 40 kg and above (also published in 14 other currencies). These are counter-handled fees, not online products.

Do partner-operated or codeshare flights have different baggage rules?

Yes. Codeshare tickets (subject to Condition of Carriage clause 3.3) cannot use prepaid baggage at all, and prepaid allowance cannot be transferred to other airlines. Flights departing Shenzhen do not support prepaid baggage purchase.

Can I get a refund or transfer extra baggage if I cancel or change my booking?

Before departure with an unused, unchecked-in ticket, a full refund is available via the original purchase channel; after departure with an unused ticket, a refund is available after the ticket itself is refunded. Used tickets cannot be refunded. Refunds are processed within 7 natural days. If the flight date changes, call 95373 before check-in to move the allowance to the new flight, otherwise the prepaid allowance is void.

Are there any important exceptions or restrictions I should know?

Economy fares in classes V/N/A/U/T on domestic routes include 0 kg free checked allowance, so all checked weight must be prepaid or paid at the counter. On Shenzhen departures, economy carry-on follows the 20 × 40 × 55 cm standard with 20 kg checked allowance handled on site. Allowance already included in special promotional products follows that product's own rules.
