Buy Extra Baggage
Updated Aug 5, 2026
Steps
- Go to www.maldivian.aero, open 'Flying With Us > Before You Fly > Baggage Policy', and check the excess baggage rate for your route (per kg in MVR for domestic sectors, USD for international sectors).
- If you travel with a surf bag or any item exceeding 60 linear inches, email the Maldivian ticketing office ([email protected]) or call 1671 as early as possible with the number of pieces, dimensions and weight so that uplift can be confirmed.
- Pay the surf bag or high-volume baggage charge at the time of booking through the ticketing office, or arrange payment before travel; size-difference and oversize penalties are collected at the check-in counter on the day of travel.
- On the day of travel, check in your bag; if it exceeds your free allowance, pay the per-kg excess rate at the excess baggage counter before receiving your boarding pass.
- Keep your payment receipt — excess baggage charges are collected separately from the fare and do not add to your ticket's baggage allowance.

Excess baggage rates (per kg)
Excess baggage above the free allowance is charged per kilogram at published sector rates and paid at the airport on the day of travel; Maldivian does not sell extra baggage online. Domestic sectors are priced in Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), international sectors in US dollars, and all rates are subject to GST. The amount of excess baggage accepted depends on aircraft capacity.

High volume baggage
Items exceeding 60 linear inches (sum of all dimensions) are classified as High Volume Baggage and incur additional charges on top of normal excess rates. Charges do not give any extra baggage allowance and uplift may have to be on the next available flight.

FAQ
Can I buy extra baggage online after booking?
No. Maldivian does not offer online or app purchase of extra baggage — neither the online booking flow nor Manage Booking includes a baggage purchase step. Excess baggage is paid at the airport on the day of travel, and surf bags/high-volume items must be arranged with the ticketing office.
Where do I buy extra baggage?
Pay excess baggage at the check-in/excess baggage counter at the airport. For surf bags and other high-volume items, contact the Maldivian ticketing office before travel — call 1671, email [email protected], or visit the ticket office in Male (+960 3335544).
When is the deadline to buy extra baggage online?
There is no online prepayment window because no online purchase exists. For surf bags and high-volume items, contact the ticketing office as early as possible — arranging uplift on the day of travel or a few days before is difficult and the item may have to be sent on the next available flight.
What are the free baggage allowances and limits?
Free checked allowance: domestic Economy 20 kg; Trivandrum and Cochin 20 kg Economy / 30 kg Business; Bangalore 25 kg Economy / 35 kg Business; Dhaka 30 kg Economy / 40 kg Business. Carry-on: 5 kg on Dash 8/ATR aircraft (max 20 × 12 × 7 inches) and 7 kg on Airbus A320 (max 20 × 15 × 9 inches).
How does Maldivian calculate extra baggage charges?
Excess baggage is charged per kilogram at published sector rates. Domestic sectors are priced in Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR 30–70 per kg), international sectors in US dollars (USD 7–10 per kg); all rates are subject to GST and are paid at the airport.
Is it cheaper to buy extra baggage online in advance vs at the airport?
No — Maldivian publishes a single excess rate with no advance or online discount. The per-kg rates on the Baggage Policy page are the only rates and they are collected at the airport on the day of travel.
What are the overweight or oversized baggage rules?
Weight above the free allowance is charged per kg at the sector excess rate. Items exceeding 60 linear inches (length + width + height) are High Volume Baggage and incur additional charges — surf bags have set charges, other items are quoted by the ticketing office; these charges do not add to your allowance. Baggage over 8 feet long (e.g. fishing rods, surfboards) cannot be accommodated, and packed surfboards must not exceed 7 feet in length.
Can I pay for extra baggage with cards or other online payment methods?
Online booking payments accept Master, Visa and Amex cards. Surf bag/high-volume charges are collected in USD, or in MVR for Maldivian locals and expatriates holding the respective identification documents.
Are there any important exceptions or restrictions I should know?
The amount of excess baggage Maldivian accepts depends on the aircraft's capacity, and high-volume charges are subject to GST and TGST. Surf bag uplift is limited to 4 small or 5 large bags per flight, and same-day or last-minute uplift is not guaranteed — the ticketing office should be informed well in advance.
