FAQ
Can I buy extra baggage online after booking?
Yes. Additional, overweight and oversized bags can be purchased online at any time: during the ticket booking process, or after booking in the 'Manage my booking' section of airtahitinui.com. The service can also be bought through the Air Tahiti Nui mobile app.
Where do I buy extra baggage?
Online on airtahitinui.com (during booking or in 'Manage my booking', which requires your booking reference and last name), on the Air Tahiti Nui mobile app, at Air Tahiti Nui sales offices, at travel agencies, or at the check-in counter on the day of departure.
How does Air Tahiti Nui calculate extra baggage charges?
The fee depends on the type of excess (quantity, weight, size) and on the origin and destination of the trip, with published tables per departure region and destination. If a bag combines several excesses (e.g. extra quantity + overweight + oversized), the fees are cumulative. For overweight bags, ATN publishes both a Piece Concept fee (per bag) and a Weight Concept fee (per kilogram, mainly on routes to/from Australia).
How many extra bags can I buy, and what are the bag limits?
The maximum weight of any checked bag is 32 kg regardless of class; above 32 kg it must be shipped as cargo. Free checked allowance is 1 x 23 kg in Moana Economy, 2 x 23 kg in Mānava Premium and 2 x 32 kg in Poerava Business (Club Tiare Silver/Gold members get 1 extra bag). Checked bags must not exceed 158 cm total dimensions; overweight applies from 24 kg (Economy/Premium) and oversized from 159 cm.
What are the overweight and oversized baggage rules?
Bags weighing 24-32 kg in Moana Economy or Mānava Premium are charged the published overweight fee; bags whose total dimensions are 159-200 cm are charged the published oversized fee. Bags over 32 kg or over 200 cm cannot be checked as baggage and must be handled by the freight service. If a bag is both overweight and oversized, both fees apply in addition to any extra-bag fee.
When is the deadline to buy extra baggage online?
There is no published cut-off: Air Tahiti Nui states the purchase can be made at any time, from booking up to the day of departure at the check-in counter. The 'Excess Baggage' service is only available once the ticket is issued; with the 'lock my fare' booking option, payment can be deferred for up to 72 hours after the reservation.
Is it cheaper to buy extra baggage online in advance vs at the airport?
Air Tahiti Nui publishes a single fee table for excess baggage: the same published rates apply whether you buy online, in a sales office, at a travel agency or at the check-in counter. No online discount or airport surcharge is published.
Can I pay for extra baggage with cards, loyalty points, or miles?
Yes. Excess baggage can be paid by standard online payment methods, and Club Tiare members of any status can use their miles for an excess bag award (e.g. 8,500 miles Tahiti-Auckland, 15,000 miles Tahiti-Paris) instead of cash.
Can I get a refund or transfer extra baggage if I cancel or change my booking?
The Excess Baggage service is nominative and non-transferable. It is refundable if the associated ticket is refundable and you request a refund for the unused ticket, if Air Tahiti Nui changes your reservation to a flight it does not operate, or after a full upgrade from Moana Economy to Mānava Premium/Poerava Business (one extra bag refunded). It is non-refundable for non-refundable tickets, if you add or cancel a stopover, change to another airline's flight, or bought it with miles. Modification is free if the original travel date changes, subject to availability.
Do partner-operated or codeshare flights have different baggage rules?
Yes. The Excess Baggage service is only offered on flights operated by Air Tahiti Nui (TN flight number, ticket 244-). For itineraries with codeshare partners (SNCF, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Japan Airlines, Qantas, Air Calin, Korean Air) or other operating airlines, consult the operating airline's website, as their bag policies may differ; the most restrictive rule applies during the trip.
Are there any important exceptions or restrictions I should know?
The service is only sold from Air Tahiti Nui's ports of call (Papeete, Los Angeles, Seattle, Paris, Auckland, Narita). For all flights departing from or arriving in the United States or Canada, the US DOT / Canadian Transportation Agency require the Most Significant Carrier's baggage allowance and excess charges to apply to the entire itinerary. Certain medical equipment or accessories for children may be carried free of charge, and listed music instruments (e.g. ukulele, acoustic guitar) and sports equipment are carried free up to 23 kg.
